MCDI is beginning to expand its work beyond Kilwa District, and Rufiji District, Kilwa’s neighbour to the north, is one of the first locations chosen for this expansion.
Rufiji District (8°0'0" N and 38°40'0" E) is located in the south of the Pwani Region, just north of Kilwa District. Rufiji is bordered to the north by Kisarawe and Mkuranga Districts, to the east by the Indian Ocean, and to the West by the Morogoro Region. The Rufiji River, the largest river in Tanzania, runs through the District. Rufiji District has an area of 13,339km², which is divided into 6 Divisions, 19 Wards and 96 Villages.
