Liwale (9°30'0" S and 38°0'0" E) is one of 6 districts in Lindi Region of south-eastern Tanzania. It lies directly to the West of Kilwa District, where MCDI began our operations, and is also bordered to the North by the Pwani Region, to the South by the Ruangwa District and to the West by the Morogoro Region.
Liwale District is divided into 3 Divisions, 16 Wards and 42 Villages. It has an area of 34,314km², approximately three quarters of which are taken up by the Selous Game Reserve. Although the district has plentiful forest cover remaining, logging pressures have escalated sharply in recent years.
